Councillors’ Corner#13 | DA’s V.d. Merwe briefs on Mbombela Ward 17

As political parties ramp up nationwide campaigns ahead of the November 4 Local Government Elections, the media spotlight turns to crucial regional battlegrounds.
In the latest edition of Councillors’ Corner, Digital News Producer Lebo Tshangela chats with Sanley van der Merwe, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor for Ward 17 in Mpumalanga’s City of Mbombela Local Municipality.
Representing a constituency that predominantly spans the urban and suburban hubs of Mbombela, Van der Merwe’s campaign is driven by a mission to resolve urgent service delivery failures.
She says this election is about finishing what she started, emphasing that meaningful change requires deep local insight and continuity.
“I believe that I have taken a lot of time to try and understand where the pockets of weaknesses are that are affecting my residents, and I have practical solutions to change it. Now, these things don’t happen overnight. In your first term, you don’t get anything changed; your second term, you start finding solutions, and then you start implementing them. My number one priority when I stepped in in 2016 was a very clear need in the community: housing.”
