Mashatile promises proper housing to residents of New Jerusalem

The African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President Paul Mashatile has promised proper housing to the residents of New Jerusalem informal settlement in Pretoria, saying that they have identified two areas with improved living conditions where these residents will be relocated.
Mashatile was speaking during a door-to-door campaign in the area ahead of the Local Government Elections next month.
Residents in the area have faced long-standing infrastructure backlogs including delayed housing developments, lack of water supply and electricity, as well as improper roads, persisting for close to a decade.
The deputy president has rejected allegations that the ANC’s visit to the residents is motivated solely by the upcoming elections.
“The leadership of the city, under the ANC now, has got plans. They got two areas where they are going to relocate them, where they will have electricity, water and proper houses and roads. Because here they just settled by themselves since 2017. We are coming back after the 4th. In all communities where we are campaigning, we are going to go back because that’s our tradition, that’s how we do things as the ANC. We don’t go to communities only because there are elections, it’s the way we operate. We do even go as government; there are programs that we have as government where we go out to communities.”
