Soweto residents queue for IDs ahead of local government elections

Residents in Soweto are queuing at Maponya Mall in Pimville to collect their identity documents, while others are applying for temporary identity certificates to ensure they can vote in Wednesday’s local government elections.
The Department of Home Affairs is also accommodating walk-in clients as it steps up efforts to assist eligible voters who still need identification documents.
The department’s Provincial Manager Mamokubung Moroke says offices have extended operating hours from 7 am to 9 pm on Wednesday to accommodate more clients.
“There’s an operations team that is looking at all these errors to make sure that the systems are flowing smoothly. So, from time to time, if there are glitches, our team is ready to resolve those. We are requesting clients to be patient because we will definitely attend to them.”
