The Electoral Commission says the results processing is almost near completion. In giving an update on the counting and tallying of results, the IEC reported that 150 of the 213 municipalities, excluding the 44 District Councils, have complete results. Furthermore, the Northern Cape is the first province to have complete results.

The balance of the results that still need to be completed are mostly in the Metropolitan municipal areas because of the high number of voting districts given the population densities in these urban nodes.

The commission has further cautioned against disinformation from social media posts claiming that election results in Wards 4 and 23 in Emalahleni Local Municipality in Mpumalanga were withheld because the ballots cast exceeded the number of registered voters.

The commission has further sought to debunk a claim that a municipal official voted four times, reminding the public that no single person can vote multiple times, as a voter may only cast a ballot in the voting district in which they are registered.

“The commission wishes to report that it has completed 91% of results for the LGE 2026. The province of the Northern Cape has concluded the result in respect of all its municipalities. The next province that will declare complete is the province of Free State, as was to be expected. The highest proportion of results still to be finalised are in the metro municipalities. This is the case because of the high concentration, both of voting districts owing to high density of voters, as well as the rate of contestations, which has resulted in longer ballot paper, but also lengthier result slips that must be captured, scanned, as well as audited. We hope to conclude the higher proportion of all provinces by midday, and deal with the residual and conclude those early on Saturday morning,” says Deputy CEO of Electoral Operations, Masego Sheburi.
