Newly formed OMO unseats ANC in Merafong stronghold

A major political upset has unfolded in Merafong Municipality, where a newly formed community movement has unseated the ANC in one of its traditional strongholds and is now demanding accountability from local government officials.
One Merafong Organisation, contesting the 2026 Local Government Elections for the first time, has called for the arrest of allegedly corrupt officials in the municipality.
The party’s Secretary General, Buti Mthembu, says residents have endured years of poor service delivery and maladministration.
“This is a symbol that when you work with the people, the community, they will trust you. Now the community has trusted us with this responsibility. We couldn’t have made it without them. This award goes to all the communities of Merafong who have been suffering under the control of the ANC for many, many years.”
“The ANC has been in charge of this ward for all these years, but because they forgot about the very people who voted for them, who put them in power, then we had to come and teach them a lesson that they will never forget, and I can tell you now that the community is on our side. Everybody is excited. They want to see PMO growing. And from here, we can only go from strength to strength and show that true leadership and true community service- that is what we are going to provide as OMO.”
