Residents of Ward 42 in KwaNobuhle, Kariega, in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro have taken to the streets in protest against the possibility of another ANC ward councillor.

They are saying they are opposed to the party retaining political control of the area.

The demonstration comes as the ANC continues to lead in the race for the ward, following Wednesday’s local government elections.

According to the latest available provisional results, ANC’s Pumeza Nyenyeku is currently leading the ward race with over 45% of the votes.

Followed by the SACP, which has secured just above 35%.

The protesters had this to say.

“Her work didn’t satisfy us while she was still working in the as the secretary to the councillor. We were not pleased during that 5-year period. So, now we are thinking what will she do with the other 5 years, because she wasn’t helpful in the past 5 years,” says one of the protesters.

“My sister’s house burnt down in January last year. They promised to bring a temporary structure for the kids, as she has now passed on, but up until now, nothing has been done,” says another protester.

Meanwhile, at 97% of the voting districts declared in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, the DA is leading at 44.53%, with the ANC in second position at 25.34% and the EFF third at 5.44%.
