More than 520 political parties were registered to contest the local government elections across different councils in the Western Cape.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) in the province says it has captured and audited 100% of its results.
Political analyst Sanusha Naidoo says these are interesting times for smaller parties who managed to make a dent in municipalities across the province, especially in the smaller councils, where identity politics have always been at the heart of contestation.
“The only thing I think we need to start going forward now is, what is the traction of these parties retaining themselves. I mean, we can say that the PA also did well in terms of how they’ve moved, in terms of their electoral footprint, but let’s also pan into the city and look at, for example, some of the wards in what are considered to be Indian defined areas, like your Surray Estate; Al Jama-ah did well there.”
“I think what we are beginning to see is not just the fragmentation of the political landscape in the province, and from the broader context from the national, but I think we are also beginning to see where smaller parties are beginning to look a little bit more interesting.”
