About the party

The African People’s Convention (APC) was formed on September 5, 2007, after Themba Godi and other members defected from the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC). In its first-ever local government elections in 2011, the APC captured one Proportional Representation (PR) seat in the City of Johannesburg, another in the City of Ekurhuleni, and individual seats in smaller local councils such as Moqhaka and Sakhisizwe. In the 2016 election, the APC lost its Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg seats but managed to win representation in the localised stronghold of the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, where it captured eight seats. The following municipal election in 2021 marked a further decline for the party, but it managed to hold onto its lone City of Johannesburg seat while its margins sank in its primary rural and regional wards.
