About the party
Known for its hard-line stance against illegal immigration and its calls for mass deportations, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) was formed by businessmen Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene on November 30, 2013. The Patriotic Alliance experienced massive growth between the 2016 and 2021 municipal elections, transforming from a minor political player into a significant kingmaker in South African local government. The party grew its national vote share from 0.06% in 2016 to 0.87% in 2021 and expanded its footprint from a mere 5 seats in 2016 to 80. The party is now part of the multi-party Government of National Unity, with its leader MacKenzie, a Minister of Sports, Arts and Recreation.
