Parliamentary committees satisfied with IEC’s election readiness

Three Parliamentary committees that conducted an oversight visit to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) headquarters to assess its state of readiness for next month’s local government elections say they are satisfied with its preparedness.
They are the Portfolio Committees on Home Affairs and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, as well as the Select Committee on Security and Justice.
Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, Mosa Chabane, says they are satisfied with the preparations made by the IEC ahead of the elections.

“Our joint visit was to ascertain the readiness of the IEC. We are confident that the preparations are under way. Secondly, the implementation of the Constitutional Court judgment is under way. Measures have been put in place to respond to that area. Thirdly, the special vote preparations, the capacity of the staff, including the field workers, and the logistics around home visits. We have raised concerns, and the areas raised by the IEC require a collective effort. Overall, we are confident that the IEC will respond to the measures that have been put in place, including the work done by the joint portfolio committees and the IEC.”
