Residents of Driehoek village outside Mahikeng in the North West say the Mahikeng Local Municipality has neglected them for three decades, as they still don’t have access to basic services.

They say there is no clinic or a school while roads in the village of less than 750 people, are in a deplorable state.

Residents are questioning whether the upcoming local government polls will bring meaningful change.

Eighty-year-old Moses Diseko, who has lived in Driehoek for decades, says he does not have water or electricity.

“I struggle a lot. I use paraffin to cook and the paraffin hurts my eyes and this is all because I don’t have electricity. Even my garden is dead. I’ve registered to vote. I don’t know if that vote will work for me but I intend to vote to see if my life will change, so I can get electricity and water and also get a house and stop living in this shack that is falling apart.”
