The Electoral Commission (IEC) has deployed 250 teams across the Amajuba District in KwaZulu-Natal to conduct home visits for elderly and frail voters casting their special votes.

The district includes Newcastle, Dannhauser and Utrecht.

IEC Regional Manager Nonhlanhla Mbonane says about 21 000 special votes have been registered in all but two of the district’s 222 voting stations.

Mbonane says the teams are expected to conduct about 6 900 home visits.

“All our infrastructure is up to date. We have provided water in voting stations that have a problematic water supply. We have ensured that there is enough lighting. I know we had a forecast of a lot of rain coming through. We do have plans on standby to assist us in case of disaster. We have engaged with necessary stakeholders to ensure our election is successful and voters are able to cast their votes,” adds Mbonane.
