Taxi violence in parts of Cape Town in the Western Cape is raising concerns about public safety and the smooth running of the Local Government Elections.

A deadly dispute over taxi routes between rival associations has resulted in several shootings, prompting fears of transport disruptions and voter intimidation in affected communities.

Last week, the Western Cape High Court granted an interim interdict against the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA), the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (CODETA) and their members in an effort to curb ongoing taxi-related violence across the city.

Khayelitsha Development Forum Chairperson Mawande Jara has welcomed the granting of the court order.

“We are grateful for the High Court decision to ensure that there is stability and calm in our communities, because this has instilled fear in different ways. Our people in different communities fear to take or to use any form of transport, because of the violence that has occurred over the past two days.”

“Maybe we should start by expressing our sincere condolences to the families that lost their family members during the process, and also we are grateful for the court order that has been issued to both associations,” adds Jara.
