SAPS ready to protect Gauteng polling stations: Mthombeni

The Gauteng Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure briefed the media on security operational readiness for Wednesday’s polling in the province .
Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni says SAPS has been conducting risk assessments, operational planning and simulation exercises.
“We are ready to ensure that the elections take place peacefully and safely given the situation that since the past few months we implemented four operational phases.”
He said during its current phase, law enforcement focuses on securing election materials as they strengthen security in high-risk areas and have activated the Provincial Joint Operational Coordinating Committee.
Mthombeni says the next phase, taking place on 4 November will have 24-hour, high visibility police presence with rapid response and public order policing to maintain law and order.
