With 98% of voting districts declared nationally in this year’s Local Government Elections, the ANC has lost significant support in all provinces compared to results from the 2021 municipal polls.

Some of the most significant losses are in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

The results highlight the changing political landscape ahead of the final declaration, with voters increasingly dividing their support among a wider range of political parties.

Comparing the performance of the current elections with that of the 2021 local government election, support for the ANC has declined across South Africa.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the party lost 21 percentage points; in the Eastern Cape 17 percentage points; in both Gauteng and Mpumalanga 15 percentage points and 14 percentage points in the Free State.

These declines point to a broad-based erosion of support for the ANC across the country, with the party facing increased competition from opposition parties in several key municipalities and urban centres.
