The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) leader Corné Mulder says this year’s Local Government Elections results suggest the voter rejection of the African National Congress (ANC).

His remarks follow ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula‘s description of the party’s election performance as “catastrophic”.

With 99% of voting districts declared nationally, the ANC has recorded a significant decline in support across all provinces compared with the 2021 Local Government Elections.

Speaking to the SABC at the National Results Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg, Mulder says political parties must carefully consider their coalition partners to ensure stable local governments.

“We want to get stable coalitions and from our perspective if you look at the results it’s quite clear the electorate indicated that they don’t want to see the ANC necessarily back in charge. So, parties must think carefully who they put back into government, but the important thing is that we’ve got one chance that goes for all the parties to make a success of coalition governments. We all understand the service delivery challenges that we have we believe we need to get our infrastructure sorted out. Then we need to get the economy to grow then we can create jobs and move away from unemployment the sooner the better.”
