ANC confident of Eastern Cape LGE victory despite legal challenges

The African National Congress (ANC) says it remains confident of victory in the Eastern Cape (EC) despite ongoing legal battles over its candidate lists ahead of the local government elections.
The party is challenging an Electoral Court ruling in the Constitutional Court, after 181 of its candidates were not registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in six municipalities, including four in the Eastern Cape.
Party spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu, says the ANC is aiming for an outright majority in the Metro, where it currently governs through a coalition.
“The Eastern Cape is the home of the ANC, that is a well-known fact. That there are matters that are also before the Constitutional Court regarding the lists does not suggest that we are going to lose the Eastern Cape. We have always governed here in the Eastern Cape. The people of the Eastern Cape have always demonstrated that their support, as well as loyalty to the African National Congress, including its historical values and its historical fathers and mothers. So, we continue with our campaign, we’re aiming for a win, as we’re aiming for a win elsewhere.”
Meanwhile, Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula met with the ANC’s Nelson Mandela Bay Regional Executive Committee in Gqeberha.
Today the National Working Committee will be visiting the African National Congress Nelson Mandela Region in Gqeberha to assess with our structures the election campaign and organisational matters.
