The Electoral Commission (IEC) says it cannot at this stage of results processing confirm the exact voter turn out- figures, but has indicated that over 15 million South Africans participated in Wednesday’s polls.

Briefing the media at the Results Operation Centre (ROC) in Midrand, Johannesburg, IEC Deputy CEO Masego Shiburi said the final voter turnout tally, can only be confirmed after all processes have concluded.

Shiburi says, “Preliminary turnout figures, as well as the rate of participation in this elections will only be determined once the counting process has concluded. In other words, we know the total number of valid votes, the votes that are spoilt, and the votes that have been discarded.”

He says, “We can indicate that at this rate, 15.9 million South Africans participated, both during special votes, as well as during the elections yesterday (Wednesday).”
