About the party
The party was initially formed in 2007 by Jack Miller and obtained its IEC status in 2008 in preparation for the 2009 provincial and national elections. Originally known as the Cape Party before adopting CapeXit as its official identifier, the party campaigns for the legal and constitutional secession and independence of the Western Cape, the Northern Cape (excluding two districts), six municipalities in the Eastern Cape, and one municipality in the Free State—including all municipalities in those provinces with an Afrikaans-speaking majority. It failed to win a single seat in both the 2011 and 2016 municipal elections. The party initially won one seat in the November 2021 municipal elections, but a 2022 court-ordered recount over ballot confusion awarded them a second seat in the City of Cape Town Metro.
