About the party
Formed by Reverend Kenneth Meshoe and other Christian leaders on December 9, 1993, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) is a consecutive party based on Bible principles. The party won its first three local government seats in the inaugural democratic municipal elections in 1995/6. In the subsequent two municipal elections, the ACDP experienced a major growth period, winning 70 seats in 2000 and sustaining that steady support into 2006. However, in 2011, the party experienced a dip in total national support, with its municipal seats across the country dropping from 70 to 40. During the 2016 municipal elections, the ACDP joined coalitions with other opposition parties to govern major metropolitan areas, including Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Nelson Mandela Bay. In the 2021 local government elections, the party regained partial ground by winning 48 seats nationwide, driven by a strong showing in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
