About the party
The National Freedom Party (NFP) was formed on 25 January 2011 after its late leader, Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, split from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). The NFP made an immediate impact in the 2011 municipal elections, securing significant votes in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and joining several governing coalitions. Due to internal factionalism and administrative errors, the NFP was disqualified across most of South Africa in the 2016 municipal elections, contesting only the Nquthu Local Municipality where it won two seats. However, the party recovered slightly in the 2021 local elections, winning 52 wards across KwaZulu-Natal and securing representation in key strongholds like eDumbe, Nongoma, and eThekwini.
