About the party
The Independent Alliance (IA) is a local civic movement formed in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal, in 2019 and registered with the IEC on August 22, 2021. Five former ANC members—who ran as independents in 2016—founded the party. In its debut election, the IA performed exceptionally well on the KZN North Coast, winning five seats in the KwaDukuza Local Municipality and stripping the ANC of its outright majority. It also won one seat in the Maphumulo Local Municipality. Amid a wave of hung councils across South Africa, this seat count instantly elevated the party to kingmaker status.
