Masuku apologises for strike disruptions in Joburg

Johannesburg’s Deputy Mayor Loyiso Masuku has apologised to the City’s residents for the disruption of waste collection and municipal operations as result of the South African Municipal Worker’s Union (SAMWU) strike.
She made the comments whilst accompanying African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President Paul Mashatile on the campaign trail in the greater Johannesburg region earlier on Wednesday. On Monday, disgruntled SAMWU workers staged a protest and blocked the M1 Highway as a result of a wage dispute with the City.

“We have an interim arrangement that we’ve done so that we can be able to catch up on the backlog and clear the waste and we sincerely apologize to residents of Johannesburg, particularly in these areas for the delay. However, this morning, I can also assure you that some of the staff have already gone back to work. You would have seen that the M1 area was not closed as it was ”
