The Electoral Commission has strongly urged voters to make their mark in the local government elections this week, but has urged people to take precautionary measures as a combination of extreme heat and rainfall is expected.

Special voting takes place on Monday and Tuesday, with the main voting day on Wednesday, which has been declared a public holiday.

Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo was addressing the media at the National Results Operations Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg.

“The weather forecast for the next two days shows the possibility of rainfall in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Mpumalanga. Other provinces such as North West, Limpopo, Northern Cape and Free State are experiencing hot weather conditions. The commission encourages voters to check local weather forecasts and to take appropriate precautionary measures to be able to vote without hiccups.”
