An elderly woman has died after collapsing while waiting to cast her vote at Shallcross Primary School, south of Durban.

It is believed the woman collapsed while standing in the queue and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

The incident has been confirmed by the IEC presiding officer at the voting station.

Election observer, Pretty Jwarah, says they are shocked and saddened by the incident.

“We had a problem in the morning at the Shall Cross voting station. Another lady was coming to our area, and when we came here, the granny was coming to vote because I am working with voting people, so they called me and told me that the granny collapsed. So we gave her water. I called her daughter, and the daughter came. We tried to pick her up with the chair. From there, we phoned the ambulance; it never came, and an Uber came because her family was there. From the hospital, I phoned her daughter; she confirmed that the mother was gone.”
