Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia says they are working to ensure that the upcoming elections are free, fair and peaceful.

Cachalia, together with National Commissioner of Police General Fannie Masemola briefed the media about the state of readiness for the upcoming elections in KwaZulu-Natal.

He says South Africans must have the opportunity to express their views through the ballot box without intimidation, citing that operational plans have been developed across all provinces to strengthen election preparedness, peace and security.

Cachalia further noted that similar readiness processes are under way countrywide.

“Sure, it’s important that our people have the opportunity to express their views by voting, and that the outcome can be said to be free and fair. We also want to ensure that across the country there is peace and security. So, we’ve been working hard for several weeks now on operational plans in all the provinces. Similar processes are taking place but I thought I should come to KwaZulu-Natal to receive the election readiness report.”
