The Democratic Alliance (DA) says the 2026 local government elections are primarily about restoring basic service delivery, including reliable water, electricity, refuse removal and safer communities.

This is according to the DA’s Deputy Federal Chair, Solly Malatsi, who spoke to SABC News on Saturday morning ahead of the party’s final campaign rally in Mamelodi, Tshwane.

Malatsi says the party is targeting outright majorities in Gauteng metros to avoid the instability that has often been seen with coalition governments.

While acknowledging that coalitions may remain a reality, Malatsi says the DA would prefer agreements with fewer, more stable partners, adding that he expects the party to emerge as the largest in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane.

“We are anticipating that we’ll be the largest party in Johannesburg, for instance, right? Ekurhuleni is looking very positive that we’ll be the largest party there, and Pretoria too. And if we get closer to 40 per cent, we are then in the strongest possible position to strike coalitions with fewer parties. There is nothing as unstable as a multi-party coalition. So, the fewer coalition parties, the better,” says Malatsi.
