After 9% of voted counted, DA takes early lead in Johannesburg

With 9% of the voting districts (VDs) declared in the Johannesburg Metro, the Democratic Alliance (DA) currently has a significant lead over the African National Congress (ANC).
The DA has already secured 40.7% of the votes in the city, while the ANC has just more than 17%.
Action SA is third with 15.4% of the vote.
This is a significant change from the 2021 results, when the ANC won 33.6% of the vote in the metro, and the DA just over 26%.
OUDTSHOORN
Vote counting has been concluded in Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo region of the Western Cape, with the DA securing 10 seats in Oudtshoorn with 39% of the vote.
They are followed by the ANC with five seats and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Freedom Front Plus (FF+) with three seats each.
There are 25 seats on the council.
The result shows the DA gaining three more seats while the ANC lost three seats since the last local government election.
The last five years also saw a very volatile council, with the Mayoral chain changing hands five times, along with many coalition changes.
FREE STATE
The ANC and DA are emerging as the two leading political parties in the Free State, with 37% of the voting districts declared.
The ANC has almost 38% of the vote in the province, with the DA on 27.4%
In the Mangaung Metro, where 24% of the votes have been captured, the DA leads the ANC by around 6%.
Last month, the Constitutional Court instructed IEC officials to add the affected ANC candidates to the voters’ roll for the metro, following a landmark ruling.
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Researcher Carike Karsten says they predict a win for the ANC in the metro once all the votes have been counted.
Karsten says, “Twenty-four percent of the voting districts have been declared. The ANC is standing at 30%, and the DA at 36%. We are predicting this to turn around, with the ANC ending at 37%, and the DA at 30.5%.”
