Our priority is stable and functional local govts: Mokonyane

ANC First Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane says the party’s priority following the municipal elections is to ensure stable and functional local governments that can deliver services to communities.
She was speaking at the Results Operations Centre (ROC) in Midrand, Johannesburg.
Mokonyane says residents expect municipalities to provide reliable water, electricity, refuse collection and other basic services.
She says the ANC is prepared to engage with other political parties where necessary to secure stability in councils.
“What is of significance is that the product that is going to be presented here at the end of the day is a product that actually must help to ensure that there is stability at local government level. And the ANC is there to ensure that there is stability, whatever the outcome of the elections, so that we deal with service delivery, effectiveness of local government, accountability of municipal employees, and so on,” she says.
Meanwhile, Limpopo ANC Secretary, Reuben Madadzhe, says their performance in the Giyani area is an indication that the voters still trust the party.
The ANC was leading by over 71%, with just about 35% of the votes counted.
In the previous local government elections, the ANC won the Giyani municipality with over 80%.
Madadzhe says they will prioritise the second phase of the bulk water project in the area.
“The community of Giyani has got confidence and trust in the ANC, and we know that we owe them services, including water provision to Giyani town and surrounding areas, which are relatively our villages. So, we are busy fixing the water treatment work in Giyani, and we think the bulk provisioning from Nandoni to Nsami and that project is complete. So, we are going to continue with phase two,” he says.
