President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to attend the Electoral Commission’s (IEC) announcement of the final results of the 2026
Local Government Elections on Sunday.
His deputy, Paul Mashatie, and several leaders of different political parties are also expected to attend.
The announcement is scheduled to commence at 18:00 at the Results Operations Centre (ROC) at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng.
The President will attend the ceremony in his capacity as President of the Republic of South Africa and deliver brief remarks.
After four days of counting and verifying results from more than 23 000 voting stations across the country, the IEC is set to announce the final outcomes of the closely contested elections.
The Local Government Elections, held on Wednesday, 4 November with special votes cast on 2 and 3 November, provided registered voters across the country with an opportunity to exercise their democratic right and civic duty to elect local public representatives and influence service delivery in their communities.
X | @SABCNews | The IEC is expected to officially announce the results of the 2026 Local Government Elections later today. What are your thoughts on the overall elections?
Following the declaration of the results, newly elected municipal councils will have 14 days to hold their first meetings, during which councillors will elect speakers, mayors and other office-bearers.
With more than 130 hung councils emerging from the elections, political parties have already begun coalition negotiations to ensure that municipal governments are constituted within the stipulated timeframe.
