There is a hive of activity at the Electoral Commission’s (IEC) Results Operations Centre (ROC) in Midrand ahead of the 2026 local government election results announcement.

Security has been intensified with limited access around the ROC.

The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) K9 Explosives Unit is conducting a sweep ahead of the announcement, which is expected at 18:00.

SAPS Mounted Unit and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) are also patrolling in and around the ROC precinct.

IEC officials and support teams are busy setting up equipment.

Jubilant uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) supporters have started singing struggle songs near the entrance of the Centre.

Police are currently trying to negotiate with MKP members to move away from the entrance.

After the announcement, the country will have to wait for at least two weeks before knowing the final outcome of the hung councils.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is also expected to attend the announcement ceremony.
