About the party
Founded on November 8, 2020, in KwaMashu, Durban by prominent funeral industry leader, Muzi Hlengwa. The African People First (APF) party is built on “New Africanism” and focuses heavily on land redistribution, a shared socialist-leaning economy, and indigenous empowerment. A debutant in the 2021 Local Government Election, the party managed to secure 8 municipal council seats across the country. The party’s most notable showing was recorded in KwaZulu-Natal's Maphumulo Local Municipality, where it finished third in Ward 11 with 6% of the vote, trailing behind the ANC and the IFP.
