About the party
Al Jama-ah was formed on April 23, 2007, by its leader Ganief Hendricks with the vision is to give the Muslim community an active and constructive voice in post-apartheid South Africa. The party secured a minimal footprint in the 2011 municipal election but in 2016 won its first crucial ward in Greater Johannesburg from the Democratic Alliance (DA), finishing with 9 seats overall. Al Jama-ah grew from a fringe minority group into a key coalition player that twice held the executive mayoralty of Johannesburg, despite modest overall vote shares.
