About the party

Formed as a result of a protest by disgruntled residents of Matatiele and local ANC members who opposed the decision to move Matatiele from KwaZulu-Natal to the Eastern Cape. In 2006, AIC won 10 seats in the Matatiele local municipality and in 2009, it won a seat in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature. In the 2014 general election, AIC secured three seats in Parliament. But lost them during the 2024 general elections.
