About the party
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) was established on July 26, 2013, by Julius Malema, a former ANC Youth League president, following his expulsion from the party in 2012. In the party’s first municipal election in 2016, the EFF established itself as the third-largest political party and a crucial kingmaker in at least 13 hung councils. This enabled the DA to form governments in major metros like Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Nelson Mandela Bay. In 2021, the EFF increased its vote share from 8.19% to 10.3% and transitioned into active governance, later securing Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) positions in key metros like Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.
