About the party
The Freedom Front (FF) was formed on March 1, 1994, by General Constand Viljoen, a former chief of the apartheid-era army. The party became the FF+ in 2003 after merging with smaller groups, including the Conservative Party of South Africa and the Afrikaner Eenheid Beweging. In its maiden 2006 local government elections, the FF+ won proportional representation (PR) seats in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg, while securing a Speaker position in Cape Town as part of a multi-party coalition. Although it failed to win any entire councils in the 2011 municipal elections, it secured 38 seats nationwide. The party expanded its footprint in 2016 by winning 66 seats, allowing it to form coalitions with the DA to govern hung councils in major economic hubs like Johannesburg and Tshwane. The FF+ achieved its best municipal result in the 2021 local elections, securing 221 seats across all nine provinces and cementing its role as a kingmaker in multiple hung councils
