The Presidency says the deployment of soldiers to KwaZulu-Natal is mainly to ensure a peaceful environment for the upcoming local government elections.

At least 510 members of the SANDF will assist police in the province.

They will be mainting law and order in light of recent violence arising from the misinformation about the Constitutional Court judgment on the Refugee Act.

The SANDF members will be in the province until the 30th of next month.

Prof Nirmala Gopal, professor of Criminology and Forensic Studies at University of KwaZulu-Natal comments on the deployment.
