The Electoral Commission has confirmed that 99% of voting stations opened across the country today, with only a few experiencing delays in parts of Cape Town.

The commission says all voting stations will remain operational until 17:00 to allow approved special voters to cast their ballots.

Voting stations opened at 08:00.

The IEC says that voting was off to a slow start in parts of Cape Town as only 10 of the 116 wards were open by 10:00.

At least 2.6 eligible voters have registered to participate in the special voting process for the local government elections.

Briefing the media in Midrand in Johannesburg, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Shiburi says efforts are continuing to ensure that all voting stations are fully operational.
