uPhongolo seniors make voices heard through special votes

Two senior citizens from uPhongolo in northern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) say they are using their special votes to make their voices heard.
Seventy-year-olds Nomusa Mdluli and Daisy Nkosi were visited by Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) officials at their respective homes in eMaphafeni and eMgomane.
They are among five residents in the area who applied for home visits to cast their special votes.
The women say they want elected councillors to deliver on their promises, particularly by addressing persistent water shortages and unemployment.
Mdluli says casting her vote gives her hope as a senior citizen and calls on elected leaders to respect the people they serve.
“I am happy to cast my vote today, and this brings hope to me as a senior citizen. If God has given you life, you must make sure that you vote and those who lead must respect people and do as people wish.”
Meanwhile, Nkosi says the community is struggling with water shortages and wants to see more young people getting employment.
