About the party
The Minority Front (MF) party was founded in 1993 and led by Amichand Rajbansi until his death in December 2011. The party enjoys most of its support from the South African Indian community, with its voter base in the province KwaZulu-Natal and eThekwini, the cultural and demographic centre of South Africa's Indian community. The inagural democratic municipal elections which took place in KZN in 1996 saw the MF establishing its initial presence in Indian-majority suburbs around Durban, winning localised council seats. In the subsequent local government election of 2001, the MF was the swing factor in local council committees. In 2006, it maintained its electoral support and for the first time, secured representation on the eThekwini Executive Committee. In 2011, following the death of its founder Amichand Rajbansi, a leadership and family succession dispute severely damaged the party's internal cohesion. In the 2016 election, a massive drop in electoral support saw the party losing almost all its council seats across various municipalities. In 2021, electoral support for the MF leveled off, but the MF managed to hold on to a single proportional representation (PR) councillor seat in the eThekwini Metropolitan Council.
