About the party
Founded in April 1959 as an African National Congress (ANC) breakaway, the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) was inspired by Kwame Nkrumah’s Africanist ideals and advocates for returning land to indigenous people. The party secured 24 seats nationally in South Africa's first democratic local elections. However, by the 2000 local elections, its national vote share fell below 1%. While it failed to win any major municipalities, it captured council seats in several cities, including Johannesburg. Although its vote share remained a fraction of a percent through the 2011 and 2016 municipal elections, the PAC expanded its footprint in 2021 by winning seats in the City of Cape Town and local councils like Mnquma and Drakenstein.
